World No.5 Daniil Medvedev is known for his controversial attitude on the court, from destroying rackets to arguing with opponents and umpires.
In an interview with Eurosport, the Russian admitted he can be childish on the court but that contrasts with his real-life persona.
"I am much more patient than on the court…You can trust me, no matter what you say you won’t make me angry right now." Medvedev stated. "No matter if you start insult me or the opposite, start complimenting me. I’m super easy going, on court that changes.
I actually don’t know exactly where it comes from, but since I was young, this importance to win something takes over. I want to do everything I can and, on the court, I can be a little childish and start crying. Not literally, but kind of in a way, that’s it. But talking with me and stuff like this is super easy going."
The 2019
US Open runner-up added that some other players chose not to intereact with him off-court due to this behavior. However, he stated that he was not bothered by this as they seemed unable to divide tennis from normal life.
When asked about his thoughts on the
US Open being held this year, Medvedev was of two mindsets.
“I don’t think we can know what is going to happen in New York at that moment, and as you may have seen, some players are against very strict rules,” he said. “At the same time, if you don’t have the strict rules, then there is a big chance of us getting infected or something else."
Medvedev added that he would like to resume playing tournaments, but it would be strange to do so without fans.
“But as I said, it’s a tough decision, when we’re going to start because it depends on the coronavirus, of course.
