Just ahead of making her trip down to Australia to commence her 2026 tennis season,
Maria Sakkari had some great news unveiled after it was revealed that she said 'yes' to a marriage proposal from Konstantinos Mitsotakis, her long-term partner.
The pair have been in a relationship with one another for five years now, forming a strong bond and connection that is set to go to the next step. Sakkari can show off an impressive engagement ring formerly worn by the groom-to-be’s mother, Mareva Mitsotaki.
The brilliant news was disclosed by Greek Prime Minister
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during his customary coffee meeting in Kolonaki with the President of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, and the Speaker of Parliament, Nikita Kaklamanis.
Sakkari's partner is the son of the Prime Minister, who was beaming when stating the news publicly, as he said that the wedding will be held in 2027. He spoke very highly of the former world number three, describing her as 'an exceptional young woman' and saying he was delighted about the engagement. He followed this by joking that both families are looking forward to becoming Grandparents in 2027.
When asked by President Tasoulas whether he was ready to be a grandfather, Mitsotakis laughed and quickly replied 'Absolutely ready!' The President continued by congratulating the Greek tennis player, saying: “Congratulations, she is an exceptional young woman.”
Sakkari showing her ring off Down Under
This positive news comes just before the start to the tennis season. Shortly after, Sakkari made the long flight halfway around the world to Australia as she is set to represent her country in the
United Cup.
She had the new acquisition of her engagement ring on her finger, with it being spotted on numerous occasions. The first time was when she posted a video where it was very much visible on her left hand. Fans also caught a glimpse of the cherished piece of jewellery alongside fellow Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas and on her arrival in Perth as she is set to make a return to the
United Cup.

She started her 2025 campaign in the unique tournament, but it ended before the year even had a chance to begin. Defeats to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Elena Rybakina sealed Greece to their fate as they failed to make it out of the group phase. It was a downgrade from their 2024 showing when they made the quarter-finals but narrowly lost eventual winners Germany. This was despite Sakkari winning all her singles ties without dropping a set.
As well as success for her country, the 30-year-old is looking to get back on track herself after a barren few years. Inbetween 2021 and 2023, she was a firm fixture in the top 10 in the world. She made it to a brace of Grand Slam semi-finals, two WTA Finals semi-finals, and three WTA 1000 finals with a title in the Guadalajara Open.
2025 has not been a good year on the court for her. She has plummeted down the rankings after numerous early exits which have seen her progress halted in the sport. Now down to world number 52 and without a title since that success in 2023, she will be hoping to kick off 2026 with a deep run in the United Cup for her country. The event will take place from January 2-11.
