Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova would like to see the top WTA player be more vocal about issues that female tennis players face.
Pavlyuchenkova is part of the WTA Player Council and recently she was a guest of the Eurosport Tennis Legends vodcast together with
Jurgen Melzer. They discussed a wide variety of topics but one particularly interesting one was the issue of the
ATP and WTA merger. On the issue the Russian commented:
"I feel like the guys, they’ve always been more united. I always hear or see in the news that Rafa, Roger or Djokovic have come up with some comments or they do something like they comment about ATP.
But I never anything from our top players from the WTA. They’re always silent. I would love to see more. Not only to see a united ATP and WTA but at least just within WTA I would like our top players like Serena, for example, to comment and come up, get a voice."
Melzer was also supportive of the idea explaining that united tennis led by one organization would be able to compete with other global sports such as football. Whether those plans will come to fruition remains to be seen especially since there isn't much support from the ATP or WTA again. But if players slowly become on board with this idea it might well happen in the future.
