Legendary tennis star and a polarising figure Margaret Court
interrupted the
Australian Open match with her phone ringing.
The 81-year-old was not allowed to attend the competition because
of her homophobic remarks in 2020 which led to calls for a complete ban from
the competition.
However, Court was seen sitting in the front row during the
current world number one Serbia’s Novak Djokovic’s quarterfinal against America’s
Taylor Fritz where he came out on top with a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
As per the Age, Tennis Australian officials were not aware
that Court managed to sneak into the arena. Four years back, Tennis Australia
distanced itself from the legendary tennis star after she spoke against the
LGBTQ+ community.
“As often stated, Tennis Australia does not agree with
Court’s personal views, which have demeaned and hurt many in our community over
a number of years. They do not align with our values of equality, diversity and
inclusion,” Tennis Australia said back then.
Court remains one of the greatest players in the history of tennis
in the women’s singles category in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand
Slam titles in her career. Her most successful competition was the Australian
Open where she lifted the title 11 times.
