A thrilling new partnership on court could emerge at the mixed doubles event at the US Open. Serena Williams is set to team up with seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz for the event ahead of the fourth Grand Slam according to a recent report.
Williams return to tennis has been the main talking point in the sport in recent times. She has launched herself back on the big stage via doubles at Queen's Club Championships, teaming up with Victoria Mboko with the pair prevailing in a very confident manner in their opening match.
However, disaster struck ahead of their quarter-final contest. Mboko, competing in the singles, took a nasty tumble and did some real damage to her left knee. The consequences are that Williams was not able to continue her comeback at Queen's with Mboko now out for the grass swing and possibly beyond.
Now having that taste for winning back, Williams is off to Germany to have a crack at the Berlin Open. A different partnership is on the table. It emerged that Coco Gauff was her first pick to step out onto the court with, but it was rejected. Instead, Karolina Muchova will be competing with her. Gauff hesitated at the news, and is now playing in the doubles with fellow American Jessica Pegula.

Williams and Alcaraz set to partner each other at US Open

Once grass is done, Williams has no intention of pausing her tennis career. She is set to make a return to the US Open, still competing in the doubles.
The mixed doubles event was changed last year and put in fan week. It saw some of the best players in the world team up and play in a shortened format at Flushing Meadows as they looked to seal the title. The only natural double pair in the field, Andrea Vavassori and Sara Errani, defended their title.
Alcaraz was one of the big names involved, partnering with Emma Raducanu after a lot of speculation between the pair. This year, the Spaniard looks set to be changing partners with a hugely intriguing team of Alcaraz and Williams a possibility according to journalist Angelo Mangiante.
Not just that, but the world number one, Jannik Sinner, will take opposing sides and partner Williams sister, Venus, on court which is set to be one of the seven-time Grand Slam champion's final venture on court.

Before all of this, Wimbledon is first on the cards. This looks like a chance for the Williams sisters to create the dream team once more. "Venus & Serena Williams will play doubles at Wimbledon with a wild card (their request has already been accepted)," it wrote. "Fun fact. At the U.S. Open, things are heading toward a star-studded mixed doubles. Negotiations are underway to field, in New York, Venus paired with Sinner and Serena paired with Carlos Alcaraz. US Open will be Venus's final appearance in New York before her official retirement,"
This would most certainly be a hugely tantalising prospect for many tennis fans around the world if it is brought to reality. The US Open will commence from 31 August - 13 September with the mixed doubles a week before from Tuesday 19-20.
