Top players were reportedly briefed about the ‘Premium Tour’
during the Australian Open 2024. The first Grand Slam of the year came to an
end on Sunday with a grand finale in the men’s singles category between Italy’s
Jannik Sinner and Russia’s Daniil Medvedev.
In the game that lasted three hours and 44 minutes, it was
the young Italian who came out on top in a five-set thriller with a score of
3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
As per the Telegraph, some top players were briefed about
the ‘Premium Tour’ during the mega-event in Melbourne. It was reported that
Tennis Australia’s chief Craig Tiley and his American counterpart Stacey
Allaster briefed the players about the tour which can begin in the near future.
As per the report, the tour will work similarly to the
football calendar works and will have 18 events as a part of it. It was also
reported that the majority of the big-name players are already on board for the
‘Premium Tour’ as it will be more beneficial for them financially.
It was also reported
earlier that in the new tour, both men’s and women’s tennis players will
receive equal pay. Despite the briefing, it is yet to be seen whether the plan
will be materialised as both the women’s and men’s tennis federations are still
not on board.
