Former world number 3, Stanislas Wawrinka celebrates his 35 birthday as there is a long career to look back on for the Swiss.
It was always a difficult task to be the Swiss no. 1 for Wawrinka as he was born only 3 and a half years after the
Maestro, Roger Federer. However, Stan still managed to have a great career and be one of the most successful players of the last decade.
Wawrinka broke to TOP 10 of the
ATP Ranking already in 2008, but he did not manage to finish the year as a part of the best 10 until 2013. That was the year when Stanislas managed to win 51 out of the 74 matches played. He also ended the year as world number 8.
But great things were just about to begin for Wawrinka. He began the 2014 season with a victory at the Australian Open ad moved to his career-high 3rd place in the ATP Ranking. Season 2014 - 2016 were the most successful for the Swiss. He ended each of the years as world number 4 and had won a total of 11 ATP titles.
Stan also added 2 more Grand Slam titles to the one from Melbourne. He triumphed at the Roland Garros in 2015 and lifted the trophy also in Flushing Meadows one year later. After 3 successful final appearances at the Grand Slam, Wawrinka lost his only Grand Slam final in 2017. He faced Rafael Nadal at the Roland Garros and did not manage to win a single set.
Besides individual achievements, Wawrinka was successful also in team competitions. In 2014, Switzerland managed to win the Davis Cup when Federer and Wawrinka both got 1 point in singles and added another for their country in doubles to win the title.
The Swiss duo was successful in doubles also before. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Wawrinka and Federer teamed up to reach great success. The Swiss duo marched through the Olympic tournament without losing a set till the final match. There, they defeated Swedish duo Aspelin & Johansson 3-1 and won the gold Olympic medals
