Stan Wawrinka speaks about his experiences training with Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal and how that shaped him moving forward.
Stan Wawrinka will certainly be remembered in tennis history. Not only was a very late bloomer but he also managed to win several slams in the Big 3 era. Let's not forget
Andy Murray who is also tennis great in his own right. Speaking on those experiences Stan said:
“When I got to the tour, he was already number one in the world and had won several Grand Slams. Few young players have had the chance to train with a champion of this level."
Not only was Federer a champion he was also a countryman who Wawrinka admired greatly. They became good friends which allowed them to win the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics for Switzerland in the doubles category.
Wawrinka also spoke how he didn't train with Roger only:
"I have always loved learning from others and I often say that I owe a lot of my Grand Slam titles to the ‘Big Three’. I am certainly the player who trained the most with Roger Federer,
Rafael Nadal, and
Novak Djokovic."
Roger was a great influence on him early on. He would give him advice and act as a big brother to Stan. When asked what is the best advice he gave him Stan said:
“The importance of living in the present moment.".
Stan explained how that allows Roger to stay grounded and calm throughout all these years. The life of a tennis professional is stressful filled with travel and being away from friends and family. It can easily cause burnout but if you live in the present moment you minimize the effect.
