Iga Swiatek has said that she doesn't want to end her career early and wants to play until her thirties.
At just 22 years old, Iga Swiatek has taken the tennis world by storm. She has four Grand Slam titles to her name, three wins at Roland Garros and one win at the US Open.
The Polish player is also currently ranked at No. 1 in the WTA world rankings, and already boasts 14 WTA tournament victories. Moreover, she has made it clear that she has no intention of stopping her career anytime soon.
Swiatek aims for long career
Speaking to reporters at the Poland Open, Swiatek said she does not think about retirement,
"I can tell the fans that there is nothing to think about, because I don't do it myself. I think I will be the kind of tennis player who will finish when I'm in my thirties."
Swiatek also added that whilst she wants to prioritise tennis for the forseeable future, there are other interests and hobbies that she would be interested in pursuing later on in her life,
"I also know that there are a lot of cool things that can be done in life, I have a lot of such projects in my head that would be interesting in the future, and I can not do too much now, because I am consumed by tennis. I think if I still have these ideas in the future, maybe I will have a second career."
Opposite to Barty
In many ways, Swiatek can be compared to the likes of former world No. 1
Ashleigh Barty. The Australian won 15 career singles titles, three of which were at Grand Slams, all while still in her early twenties.
However, this early success meant that Barty struggled to stay motivated, and she ultimately retired at 25. This appears to have been the right decision for her, as it allowed her to move on from a sport which she admitted to no longer having 'the physical drive' or 'the emotional want' for. In July 2023, she gave birth to her first child.
However, Swiatek's recent statements highlight that she is planning to undertake a very different path, and we will hopefully see her continue in the sport for many years.
