The United Cup will start in the early hours of Friday morning (December 27) with Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz anchoring top seeds USA. They have been placed in Group A alongside Canada and Croatia.
It means they have the chance to get revenge on Canada who will be led by Felix Auger-Aliassime and Leylah Fernandez. The USA tandem have both said the hope is to win.
But also both anchor alongside Danielle Collins, a United Cup side that will have less expectations. With a lot of star names not bothering e.g Emma Navarro, Jessica Pegula, Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul. All of whom either play elsewhere next week or don't start their season yet.
So while expectation will be there, it is perhaps less so this year. They play Canada on Sunday and then Gauff will joust with Donna Vekic on Tuesday and for the WTA Finals champion, she is ready not only to play with Fritz again but also to win.
“The hope is to win,” Gauff said of her tournament goal after landing in Perth this week. She was pictured on social media spending Christmas with her family. Also in a new destination as usually she plays Auckland.
“It’s really cool to play with Taylor. We’re both coming off a good year.
“It will be our second time playing together, so hopefully we can do even better than the Olympics.”
While Fritz also lauded Gauff and said team events are his favourites to be involved in throughout the year.
“The year we won, we could use our team’s depth a lot more to help us,” Fritz said.
“Now a lot more things can go wrong for the favoured team. It’s just one match each and the deciding mixed doubles.
“I’m still excited to play. I’m glad Coco is here. Obviously we’re a top team.
“Team events are always my favourite. It’s a different kind of energy.”
