The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced on Thursday that due to safety reasons surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, spectators will be barred from qualifying rounds at this year's US Open in New York.
"This was a particularly tough decision for the USTA to make, given the immense popularity of U.S. Open Qualifying among fans," the USTA said in a statement on Thursday.
"But after consulting with local health authorities and the U.S. Open medical team, it was determined that it was the right decision to ensure the health and safety of all."
Furthermore, the USTA revealed that over 2,500 people including athletes and their team will be on site during the qualifying rounds. These matches will be held at Flushing Meadows a week before the main competition kicks off on August 30.
With no spectators present during the 2020 US Open, the USTA announced earlier in June that it will allow 100% fan capacity for the main draw of the final Grand Slam of the year.
