Jessica Pegula has said that she loves being called the American No. 1 ahead of her bid for a maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open.
World No. 3 Pegula has had a hugely successful time on the North American swing this year. The 29-year-old won her third WTA title at the Omnium Banque Nationale Canadian Open earlier this month, helping her to solidify her place as the third seed going into the US Open and her position as American No. 1.
Pegula is not only the top American woman, with her doubles partner Coco Gauff also in the top 10 at No. 6, but the top American singles player, as the highest-ranked men's singles players are world No. 9 Taylor Fritz and No. 10 Frances Tiafoe.

Pegula enjoys being called American No. 1

Speaking ahead of her opening match at the US Open which will take place at Arthur Ashe Stadium tomorrow, Tuesday, August 29, Pegula said that she enjoys being called the American No. 1.
"I love it when they say like number one because I'm still the number one American, not just woman but man and woman," she said.
"So I think that's pretty cool. So just that, I love when they say that," Pegula added.
A fan shared the video on X, formerly known as Twitter, with the caption:
"She loves sitting on the throne," followed by a crown emoji.
Pegula will face Camila Giorgi in her opening round at the US Open. Her compatriot Gauff is among the favorites to win the Slam after her victory at the Cincinnati Open last week, where she defeated Karolina Muchova in the final.
