Iga Swiatek
had no trouble advancing to the second round of the
US Open with a commanding
victory over
Rebecca Peterson.
It was a
devastating start for the Polish world No. 1, who had no difficulties defeating
the Swedish player Rebecca Peterson in 58 minutes.
Swiatek
showcased a solid performance in the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, though
both appearances ended with semifinal losses to American players Jessica Pegula
and Coco Gauff, respectively, both of whom eventually became the champions of
the WTA 1000 events.
As the
first seed and defending champion, there are high expectations for Swiatek,
especially since her world No. 1 ranking is at stake, with Aryna Sabalenka
surpassing her in this week's live ranking.
Rebecca
Peterson did not participate in the US Open Series WTA 1000 events and competed
in challenger tournaments during those weeks, earning some victories on hard
courts, including against Dian Perry and Kaia Kanepi.
Ranked
world No. 86, Peterson faced a tough draw in the main draw and couldn't match
the level of the challenge, exiting the tournament quickly.
The first
set was a display of complete dominance by Swiatek, who took only 25 minutes to
secure a 6-0 victory by earning three consecutive breaks. Swiatek capitalized
on three out of four break points she had and didn't give her opponent any
chances.
Peterson's
nine unforced errors and Swiatek's 8 winners allowed the Polish player to win
76% of the points.
In the
second set, Peterson attempted to find her way into the match and managed to
create three break opportunities. However, Swiatek saved them all and started
with an advantage. Peterson won her first game of the match thanks to her
serve, but it was only a temporary respite within an overwhelming match.
Swiatek
achieved two more breaks and held her service without any issues, securing a
resounding victory with a score of 6-0, 6-1.
In the
second round, Swiatek will face Dara Saville, who defeated Clervie Ngounoue
with a score of 6-0, 6-2.
