Marta Kostyuk gave a sweet family shoutout to her younger sister Zoryana, who watched her reach the quarter-finals at the
DC Open.
World No. 35 Kostyuk stole the show at the
WTA 500 event yesterday, August 3, as she defeated second seed
Caroline Garcia in straight sets. The Ukrainian player broke the Frenchwoman's serve twice to ensure a victorious score of 6-2, 6-3.
This comes after a strong season for Kostyuk, who won her first WTA title at the 2023 ATX Open where she defeated Varvara Gracheva in the final, also in straight sets.
Kostyuk's sister gets 'bonus' for being 'lucky charm'
Kostyuk's younger sister Zoryana was among the fans supporting her in the stands at Washington, and during her on-court interview after the match, the 21-year-old was able to give her sibling a special shoutout.
She was asked if Zoryana would receive a bonus this week for being her lucky charm, to which Kostyuk replied that she already got a bonus by getting her nails done for the first time. She also jokingly revealed that their mother doesn't know about the nails:
"She already got some bonus. She did her nails for the first time in her life, so I think it's a good bonus to start with and my mom doesn't know about it, so it's like a little secret too," she said.
Zoryana burst out laughing at the comments, hiding her face out of embarrassment before displaying her newly decorated nails to the camera.
Jokes aside, Kostyuk also highlighted that sharing this experience with her sister was very special, and she was happy to have her there for support.
"she is a great support and I'm very happy to share this with her," she added.
Kostyuk will face eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova in her quarter-final match at the Citi Open and will be hoping to do as well as possible whilst looking towards the US Open in a few weeks' time.
