Protestors disrupted multiple matches on Monday morning at the 2024 Rome Open with people in orange vests jumping on multiple courts and scattering confetti on the clay.
Madison Keys and Sorana Cirstea were playing the second set of their fourth round match on Pietrangeli with Keys leading 6-2, 3-1. A protestor ran onto court with bags of confetti which he proceeded to scatter on the court before security guards hauled him off.
Play was suspended for nearly an hour with the court cleaned. A similar incident occurred moments later on Court 12 in a men's doubles match. Pavic who was playing got face to face with one of the protestors who also scattered confetti. This caused another delay.
According to Jose Morgado, a third protest was planned on Grandstand, but it was stopped before they could. The US Open and Wimbledon have previously played host to multiple protests mainly to do with oil and climate change. It is unsure what the thought process was behind this one.
