Iga Swiatek has revealed that
Frances Tiafoe told her not to win her opening match at the
US Open too quickly as he follows her onto the main court.
World No. 1 Swiatek breezed past
Rebecca Peterson in her first match at the last Grand Slam of the season in New York, defeating the Swedish player in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
This is a successful start for the 22-year-old, who is aiming to defend her title at the US Open. However, she disclosed afterward that she was told not to win as fast as she did.
Swiatek says Tiafoe told her to not win too fast
During her on-court interview following her win, Swiatek said that world No. 10 Tiafoe, who follows her onto the court where he is playing Learner Tien, told her not to win too quickly as then he wouldn't have time to warm up properly.
"Well, Frances [Tiafoe] told me yesterday actually tonight not make it too quick because he doesn't have time to warm up or do other stuff," she said while laughing.
However, Swiatek also expressed her happiness at the outcome of the game and how she played.
"I really wanted to play solid and start the tournament with everything that I kind of focused on when I was practicing here for the whole week.
"So I'm happy that I could play such a great game and I just feel happy that with all the pressure and expectations I can just have fun on court," she said.
