Taylor Fritz has shared his excitement about competing in team events as he contributes to Team World's extensive lead at the Laver Cup.
The World No. 8 is competing against Team Europe in Vancouver, Canada between September 22-24. His teammates are Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Francisco Cerundolo.
Fritz has had a successful time at the tournament, defeating World No. 6 Andrey Rublev in straight sets yesterday, 6-2, 7-6 (3) to help build up a 10-2 lead for John McEnroe's Team World after the second day. On Day Three, he will face Norway's Casper Ruud, who is the only member of Team Europe to have won a match so far.
This year marks Fritz's fourth appearance at the Laver Cup and he has an impressive win-loss record of 6-1 in singles at the tournament. The 25-year-old has expressed his love of competing at the event and as part of a team in general.
"I feel like my record in team events is really strong because I have a team cheering for me. I get pumped up. I’m excited to play for them. It just adds more pressure and fire to it. I think I play better in those situations," he said.
The American has been solid on the ATP Tour recently, winning the Atlanta Open and reaching the semi-final of the DC Open over the summer, before making it to the quarter-finals of the US Open.
Ahead of Fritz's clash with Ruud on Day Three of the Laver Cup, the World No. 9 expressed a similar confidence stemming from playing as a team. The Norwegian has been struggling as of late, suffering an early exit in the second round of the US Open. However, he secured a win here against Team World's Tommy Paul.
"We’re young and we’re strong and we’re ready for the rest of the weekend," he said after defeating the American player 7-6 (6), 6-2.
