Mirra Andreeva has completed her
Australian Open preparations with victory in the
Kooyong Tennis Classic exhibition tournament to continue her superb form as of late. She saw off Danielle Collins 7-6, 6-1 defeating the former finalist emphatically.
Andreeva played in Brisbane last week losing in the Quarter-Finals to Linda Noskova with both in superb form outside of the leading lights in Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka. She begins her Australian Open campaign in the early hours of Monday morning against Bernarda Pera.
The first set of the exhibition was close, with both producing on serve and return and both sealing a break a piece at points however neither managed to capitalise. The opening set as a result went to a tie-break in which Andreeva just about edged it and claimed the advantage.
She saved four break points in the second set while sealing two of her break chances to prevail in superb style. She will join a spate of teenagers in the draw including Brenda Fruhvirtova also 16 and Sara Bejlek 17 while Alina Korneeva will make her debut. The 16-year-old who was superb on the ITF tour last season was the winner in the girls final last year at the Australian Open also featuring Andreeva.
Both have taken different paths since then with Andreeva emerging fully onto the senior tour and being the WTA Newcomer of the Year and after having to come through qualifying, Korneeva who has been touted for some time will hope to follow a similar route as the WTA Next Generation begin to show through.
