The 2023
Bad Homburg Open begins on Sunday 25 June and runs until Saturday July 1 and marks the end of the run up to Wimbledon.
TennisUpToDate as ever helps to
preview the action taking place this week with a field including World No.1
Iga Swiatek headlining.
Swiatek leads field in only grass court warm-up
A tournament which is ran at the same time as the Eastbourne International which takes place in the UK close to Wimbledon, only two out of the top ten on the WTA side are playing that tournament.
The main player not is Iga Swiatek who has decided to play her one and only grass court warm-up in Germany.
After winning Roland Garros, Swiatek went for a common approach and decided to take a break instead of slogging it at grass court openers.
Will it pay off though? She will not head into Wimbledon as the favourite despite being World No.1.
This being due to Swiatek's struggles on grass. The Pole has admitted them herself and only has a Wimbledon girls title of note on the surface.
But her rivals and the players seen as the leading lights for the title in London including Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur have failed to wow thus far.
Barring Sabalenka, both play Eastbourne this week. But who else is in Bad Homburg.
Canadian duo
Bianca Andreescu and
Leylah Fernandez lead the remaining players, as well as
Liudmila Samsonova who made her breakthrough on the surface.
Donna Vekic after reaching the final of Berlin is pencilled in to head to Berlin but like Alexander Bublik in Halle, whether she does is another matter. Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Garcia were among those initially entered but both are not playing.
There has also been a tribute to the career of Andrea Petkovic before play began with Angelique Kerber (below with Swiatek) also in attendance. A player who will most likely return here next year on her return to the court.
