While qualifying is the main part of the first full day of action at the Rome Open, there are still multiple top ties from the first round all from WTA set to take place on Tuesday May 7.

Our preview looks ahead to some of the top ties and leading storylines ahead of Day Two at the Rome Open and which matches to look out for.

Andreeva-Badosa headlines Day Two

One of the main matches to come from Day Two is second on so will take place mid morning at the Rome Open as Mirra Andreeva faces off against Paula Badosa in one of the top matches drawn on Monday at the idyllic setting of the Trevi Fountain.

Albeit it is more of a match on paper that looks good instead of being a likely mismatch between a player who is on form and one who really isn't. Andreeva reached the Quarter-Finals in Madrid last week and under new coach Conchita Martinez who she isn't sure she will keep yet, she has returned to form. This after injury problems earlier this year after her stellar 2023.

Something that Badosa is yet to bounce back from. The Spaniard who has just split up from Stefanos Tsitsipas has spent more time withdrawing due to injury from tournaments than playing it seems over the past 12 months since sustaining a stress fracture in her back last year. She has gone through some real struggles and will have to take injections she has said recently in order to prolong her career in what could be the end for her. But the hope will be that it will still be an entertaining contest between the pair.

Leylah Fernandez will look to ignite her Clay-lah exploits too on Tuesday when she takes on Ana Bogdan last up. It is mainly a day for the Italians with Martina Trevisan the most high profile. She faces Yulia Putintseva in another one for Match of the Day. Elsewhere Angelique Kerber who hasn't played since Stuttgart where she lost to Emma Raducanu will face Lauren Davis in her opener. Camila Osorio v Arantxa Rus another highlight from the outer courts. Mainly though it is qualifying until Wednesday when the tournament really starts in earnest.
