The draw has been confirmed on Monday morning on the WTA side of the draw for the 2024 Rome Open which will take place between May 7 and May 19 at the Foro Italico.
Elena Rybakina won the title last year and will return to defend it this time around. She defeated Anhelina Kalinina 6-4, 1-0 ret with the latter retiring due to a left thigh injury. Iga Swiatek will be top seed in the tournament while Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff will also star.
Swiatek will open up in the second round against Caroline Dolehide or a qualifier. Sabalenka faces a Qualifier or Yafan Wang. Rybakina takes on Irina Camelia Begu or a qualifier. While Gauff will face Magdalena Frech or Ashlyn Krueger. Other ties include potentially Marketa Vondrousova facing Leylah Fernandez in the second round. Paula Badosa and Mirra Andreeva will face off with the winner facing Emma Navarro. Jelena Ostapenko will face Elina Svitolina also who was present for the draw and seems to have bad luck every time she picks draws as evidenced in Auckland.
Emma Raducanu is not present for instance. She decided against playing qualifying and was not handed a wildcard for the tournament. Roland Garros is a similar situation which makes the situation even more puzzling.
