The final will be one to marvel over at the
Adelaide International as Victoria Mboko faces
Mirra Andreeva in a battle of the two top teens on the WTA Tour.
Andreeva will go one step closer to ticking off one of the final part of her tennis bucket list initially before the Grand Slams in the form of a WTA 500 title. She saw off her doubles partner
Diana Shnaider in straight sets to reach teh Adelaide final where she faces Mboko.
Andreeva already owns three titles on the WTA Tour including one at 250 and two WTA 1000 crowns but has. never won a 500. That could change as Andreeva will be favourite on paper albeit in a close test as she faces Mboko in Saturday's final. She defeated her close friend and doubles partner
Diana Shnaider 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 23 minutes to set it up. It is the fifth final of her career.
In regards to the final, Mboko she said is a player that she has known since she was 12 so they have come up on the same slipstream together and are ruling the roost when it comes to rising teens.
Andreeva throughout her run saw off another rising teen in Maya Joint easily who is just behind them in regards to rankings as well as Iva Jovic being in the semi-finals in Hobart who at 18 is the same age as Andreeva but is also performing superbly so the future is bright and the final could be the first showcase of that.
Andreeva awaits Mboko after swatting aside Shnaider
"Yeah, Vicky, she’s a great player. She had an amazing season last year, and I’ve known her since I was 12 years old. So again, I’m probably going to have to come up with an imaginary name as well," said Andreeva. "But yeah, I think it’s going to be an amazing match. She’s been playing well since the beginning of the year already. I think I’ve been playing not bad as well, so I think it’s going to be a great match tomorrow. I hope you guys come and support us."
In regards to her win over Shnaider, she won 5/10 on break points, sealed 63% of first serve points and second serve she sat on 60% compared to 1/2, 49% and 36% of her opponent showing the difference in dominance here.
Set one could've gone the other way though as Shnaider was 3-1 up. Andreeva lost her serve after being 40-15 up and seemingly cruising as Shnaider had her in trouble from the jump at 3-1. But despite Shnaider having multiple chance to hold, she spurned them. Andreeva broke straight back in another long game as she made it 3-2.
She broke again more emphatically this time going 4-3 up and sealed the set from there as she held for 5-3 and then broke again to win the set in a set that could've easily gone to Shnaider had she kept her cool post break.
Second set at least at the start was a bit of a war of attrition as Shnaider gave Andreeva the first break chance at 2-2 but it wasn't until 4-2 that it was taken as Shnaider faded and only won three more points in the whole game. She was broken then Andreeva held easily before breaking again 40-30 to seal the win and being 15-30 down. Kind of summed up Shnaider's day. Fine margins could've changed it but as it was Andreeva won easily.
