After Elina Svitolina secured her semifinal spot at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen yesterday, Ashleigh Barty and Belinda Bencic joined her today.
Thursday in Shenzhen started with a match between world number one Ashleigh Barty, and 6th seeded
Petra Kvitova. The Czech player needed a win as she struggled in past 3 matches. She lost to Barty in Beijing and at the
WTA Finals she lost to
Osaka and Bencic.
But the match did not go well for Kvitova. Although she had 4 break points, she did not convert any and lost in 2 sets. Barty won 6-4 and 6-2 after 90 minutes and added 2nd point needed for securing the semifinal spot.
In the second match,
Kiki Bertens, who replaced Naomi Osaka and
Belinda Bencic fought for the second place in this group. It seemed as Bertens will be able to win the match, when she was leading already 5-3 in the first set. But since that moment she did not win a single game, and retired in the second set. And so Bencic advances into the semifinals from the 2nd place in the group.
