Mirra
Andreeva breaks into the top 20 and achieves her goal with double motivation—an
eagerly awaited dog as a pet. The Russian teenager convincingly defeated Magda
Linette and secured 12 wins in her last 14 matches, guaranteeing her first-ever
entry into the world’s top 20.
In the
quarterfinals, she will face 5th seed and local hero
Zheng Qinwen, who is also
inspired during this late part of the season. Andreeva had set the goal of
entering the top 20 at the beginning of the year, with the clear aim of getting
a dog afterward.
Andreeva reaches Top 20 — Dog Deal Finally in reach
Andreeva
has spoken about her love for dogs several times, despite never having had one
as a pet. In a recent video on What the Vlog,
Daria Kasatkina’s YouTube
channel, the teenager regretted how close she was to achieving this goal a few
months ago: "If I get into the top 20 by the end of the year, I get a dog.
I was twenty-first, but Vika Azarenka was 20th."
She also
spoke about her coach, Conchita Martínez, and joked about the main reason for
choosing the former French Open champion as her coach: "We have such a connection.
She even brought a dog. That’s the only reason I practice with her—because she
has a dog," she laughed alongside Kasatkina.
This time,
after defeating Linette 6-1, 6-3 on the Center Court in Beijing, Andreeva
finally secured the highest ranking of her career as world No. 19. Should she
beat Zheng, she would move up another two spots to No. 17. "I didn't think
about it, [then] when the score was 6-1, 3-1, I remembered," she said. "Then
I got tight and I lost my serve. I was so tight. Those thoughts almost
destroyed me in the match. In the end, I managed not to think about it and just
concentrated on my game, but I was this close to losing it."

Andreeva
will be the youngest player to reach the top 20 since Nicole Vaidisova in 2006,
though for the young Russian, her main motivation was something else: "I've
always wanted a dog," she said. "I've never had any pets. And my mum
told me, 'Well, if you're Top 20, I might be able to get you a dog.' I now have
the chance to buy a dog whenever I want!"
However,
she admitted that it’s not the right time just yet: "I think I will not
buy a dog right away," she said. "I want to buy a dog when I am super
confident that I will be able to give everything I can to the dog because it's
like a little child. Now, it's a bit complicated. I need to get more mature so
I can take care of my dog,” Andreeva concluded.
