Former World No.1 and multiple Grand Slam champion,
Angelique Kerber won't return at the
Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after all after withdrawing from next week's action which is set to commence from February 18. The German is a two-time semi-finalist.
Kerber initially signed up to play with her Protected Ranking of 31st. But the German will be absent from the tournament and will be replaced by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. This comes after she played last time out in Linz and was beaten easily by Lucia Bronzetti in a disappointing return.
She lost out with ease to Danielle Collins at the 2024 Australian Open after having an instrumental role in Germany winning United Cup earlier in the season. She has admitted she travels with her daughter which while harmonious and isn't placing much in the way of expectations on her is likely behind the factor.
As a result, she is likely to return towards Indian Wells and Miami similar to Caroline Wozniacki who snubbed all three tournaments in the Middle East without entering tournaments unlike Kerber. Only really Naomi Osaka has played a full tour since becoming a mother and returning in 2024.
