Former
Wimbledon champion
Angelique Kerber turned back the clock to put forward an amazing performance against Gauff to win 6-4 6-4.
It was an amazing match on Centre Court between Angelique Kerber and
Coco Gauff that saw the German beat the American in straight sets. It was a very contrasting style of clashes with Gauff being very aggressive and Kerber rather defensive. Experience mattered in this match a lot as Gauff oftentimes found herself unable to find a way to break through the defence of Kerber.
Even at times when she did Kerber still found a way to turn things to her advantage. The match opened in a funny way as we saw 5 breaks in the first 5 games. At the end of that madness, it was Kerber with a break up and she was able to hold it for the remainder of the set.
The 2nd set was a similar one as once again Gauff seemed like the more engaged and active player on the court. She played better at times but a lot of times she succumbed to her inexperience. Kerber won many rallies thanks to her savyy playstyle and simply by waiting for Gauff to make a mistake.
Even when Gauff had break points late in the 2nd set Kerber found a way to save them. She saved two and confirmed the lead with 5-3 from where she cruised toa 6-4 finish and the Wimbledon quarterfinal.
