Famous French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou has laid out the reasons for Loic Boisson’s historic run at the recent French Open. Mouratoglou is currently coaching former world number one and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, so he knows his way around the WTA circuit and just what it takes to be successful.
Posting a video to his Instagram on the 10th of June, Mouratoglou was able to break down the reasons behind one of the best stories from the French Open. Boisson was able to reach the semi-finals at Roland Garros, where she was eventually bested by Coco Gauff, who went on to win the entire event. Along her way to the final, Boisson defeated world number six Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals, proving her quality despite the low ranking.
Mouratoglou took to his Instagram account to discuss the three key elements of what had to happen for this fairytale to take place.
“I think that what Lois Boisson has achieved is full of lessons. Lesson number one, anything can happen, anyone can beat anyone in tennis, which we knew theoretically, but until someone who’s ranked 360-something in the world beats, I mean, back-to-back world number three, world number six and reaches the last stages of a Grand Slam, it’s just theory—until it’s made. Now it’s made. She believes she can do it, and she did from the start. Actually, she said it—she feels she’s able to beat anyone.
Second lesson, tennis is a mental game. And when you look at the matches, she’s been the more stable emotionally. We’ve seen Pegula, we’ve seen Andreeva going through a lot of mental ups and downs and emotional moments during the matches that have hurt their games tremendously. She has been stable all the time. And when you are able to achieve this mental stability during the matches, you have such an edge on any other player.
And the third one is probably the role of the crowd. She’s at home, the crowd is fully behind her. When you don’t feel you have to deliver because your ranking is low, so you have nothing to lose and the crowd is behind you fully, then it’s incredible, the power of that.
The other lessons we can take are—how did she do it? This is where we get other lessons".
Full of praise for the unlikely achievement Lois Boisson managed at the French Open, it will be fascinating to watch her career develop as she aims to go two steps further in the future and potentially win a Grand Slam title. For now, Boisson will be fully focused on the grass swing, working to adjust to life as a player ranked 65th in the world.
