Commentators
and fans criticized the WTA for not updating the
Indian Wells semifinal between
Coco Gauff and
Maria Sakkari on their social media platforms. The official WTA
channels had no videos or tweets of the match until several hours later,
prompting fans to question whether the organization gives enough importance to
the tour and its players.
For many,
it seemed unbelievable that there were no updates considering the significance
of the occasion, a WTA 1000 event and for many players and fans, the most
relevant, often dubbed the "fifth Grand Slam."
Tennis
journalist Mario Boccardi expressed disbelief that such an important match was
not updated by the WTA:
“I genuinely
can't believe that the WTA official Twitter account still hasn't published
anything about Maria Sakkari reaching a WTA 1000 final at the end of a great
battle vs. the US Open champion and world #3 Gauff This is literally one of the
biggest tournaments of the year...”
“I couldn't
believe it either. If Coco Gauff had won we all know it would 100% have been
there. We just want a level playing field for ALL players. It's so
disrespectful towards @mariasakkari,” some fan responded on X:
