Just like last time, minus one game, it was a repeat script for
Iga Swiatek as she won
Indian Wells for a second time thrashing Maria Sakkari in the final as the World Number One does 6-4, 6-0. But it was the Greek that was at the centre of achievements for the gracious Pole post match.
Sakkari has come from not being able to hit a ball over the net last month and wondering whether a break from the sport was needed after hitting a wall and losing in the opening rounds most weeks. But with new coach, David Witt by her side after leaving Jessica Pegula, it is starting to look up for the Greek who can leave California with her head held high.
But it's not just her persona on court that Swiatek was full of praise for, it was the person that Sakkari is and that as ever is the mark of a true champion in the form of Swiatek who becomes only one of a few to claim Indian Wells on multiple occasions.
“It’s amazing to stand here again. Congrats to Maria. You’re one of these players who’s always fighting and going through ups and downs. But for me more important is how you are off the court," said Swiatek.
"You’re truly one of the kindest people in the locker room. You can feel that you’re honestly a good person.. thanks for making the locker room a nicer place. Also congrats to your team. I hope you achieve great things together.”
