Competing for the first time since February last year, world no. 1
Ashleigh Barty claimed the ninth WTA trophy at the
Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne.
Ashleigh prevailed over
Garbine Muguruza 7-6, 6-4 in an hour and 47 minutes, celebrating in front of the home fans and gathering a boost ahead of the Australian Open. It was their fourth encounter and the third win for the Aussie, who converted four out of 11 break chances to seal the deal in straight sets. Garbine was the player to beat in the previous rounds, failing to deliver the same numbers today despite converting all three break points.
The second set's first game offered six deuces, with Barty converting the third break chance after forcing the opponent's error that sent her a set and a break up. Garbine broke back in game six, and they both served well in games seven and eight to level the score at 4-4. Ashleigh grabbed a decisive break at 4-4 with a forehand down the line winner and held at love a few minutes later with a perfect lob winner to seal the deal and lift an attractive trophy.
