Ashleigh Barty won her maiden
Wimbledon on Saturday and she is already thinking ahead preparing to travel to the Olympic Games.
Back in January, Ashleigh Barty and her team sat down to outline a plan for the season with their major goals being Wimbledon and the Olympics. After winning the former on Saturday all her focus shifts to Tokyo. She said:
“I’m extremely proud to be on my first Olympic team. And I know we’re united, 490-odd Aussie Olympians going over as one team. I’m excited to be a part of that. And I’m excited to do Australians proud, as every other athlete will. I’m certainly looking forward to that experience.”
Barty will look to become the first Australian woman to win a gold medal in tennis. Australia has only one women's tennis medal which was won in 2004 by Alicia Molik. Barty was asked about being so long from home and going back to Australia after Wimbledon. She said:
“Of course, there are sacrifices, but I think everyone in their profession over the last 12 or 18 months have had to make sacrifices of some sort. The world has changed, without a doubt, but I feel incredibly grateful."
