Bianca Andreescu advanced to the final of the WTA 125 tournament in Austin after defeating Paula Badosa 6–2, 3–6, 6–3 in the semi-finals on Friday. The match brought together two former champions of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, but instead of competing in California, the pair met hundreds of kilometres away in Texas.
The timing created a notable contrast. While the WTA Tour’s leading players contested the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Open, two past winners of that same tournament faced each other at a lower-tier event. Andreescu lifted the Indian Wells title in 2019, while Badosa claimed the trophy in 2021.
Both players had exited early from this year’s Indian Wells draw. Badosa fell in the opening round to Yulia Putintseva, while Andreescu was eliminated by Donna Vekic. Their meeting in Austin therefore provided an opportunity to gain matches and momentum as they continue their attempts to rebuild their rankings following injury interruptions.
Andreescu ultimately secured the victory after two hours of competitive tennis, earning her place in the final where she will face Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudee, who advanced through qualifying to reach the championship match.

Andreescu edges three-set contest against Badosa

The Canadian controlled much of the opening set, taking advantage of early pressure on Badosa’s serve. Andreescu secured multiple breaks to establish a clear lead and closed the set 6–2 after just over half an hour.
Badosa responded strongly in the second set, raising her first-serve effectiveness and becoming more aggressive in baseline exchanges. The Spaniard converted key break opportunities during the middle stages of the set and levelled the match by taking it 6–3.
The deciding set remained tight through the early games before Andreescu produced the decisive breakthrough. After breaking Badosa’s serve midway through the set, the Canadian held her advantage and closed out the match 6–3.
Andreescu finished the match with seven aces and won 69 percent of points behind her first serve. She also converted four of eight break-point opportunities, while Badosa managed two breaks from five chances. Overall, Andreescu won 53 percent of total points in the contest.

Strong field highlights depth of Austin WTA 125 event

Both players reached the semi-finals with solid runs through the draw. Andreescu defeated third seed Solana Sierra in the opening round before beating Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in straight sets. She then overcame Australian qualifier Emerson Jones – a former junior No. 1 – in three sets to secure her place in the final four.
Badosa’s path included a comeback victory over Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the first round, followed by a straight-sets win against former Wimbledon quarterfinalist Lulu Sun. The Spaniard then defeated Austria’s Sinja Kraus in the quarter-finals to set up the semi-final clash with Andreescu.
Despite its WTA 125 status, the Austin tournament featured a field closer in strength to that of a WTA 250 event. Several established players entered the draw, including McCartney Kessler, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Kimberly Birrell and Donna Vekic, creating a deeper level of competition than typically seen at Challenger-level tournaments.
Andreescu will now attempt to capture the title when she faces Tararudee in the final, while Badosa’s run in Austin nonetheless provides valuable match play as she continues her gradual return to full fitness after persistent back problems that have limited her schedule in recent seasons. The 25-year-old player secured a return to the top 150 (No. 146 in the live ranking so far).
