Tennis fans were quick to slam
Eugenie Bouchard for her dig at
Simona Halep, following the Romanian's four-year ban for doping.
Halep had been provisionally suspended since October 2022 for violating anti-doping regulations, and the former World No.1 was finally handed a four-year ban by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
Bouchard takes subtle dig at Halep, fans not pleased
Following the announcement, Bouchard took to social media to take a sly dig at Halep.
"I was told not to tweet today," she posted.
The Canadian has made her anti-doping stance clear in the past, as she made similar comments when Maria Sharapova and Dayana Yastremska were involved in doping violations. However, tennis fans were not pleased by Bouchard's comments, with many firing back at the former Wimbledon runner-up for her insensitivity towards Halep.
"Zero lessons learnt!! Pros coming out to kick somebody down when they are at their lowest are the worst. Simona has a right to appeal, she had an illustrious career even before this whole episode began and yet such tweets," a fan commented.
"Oh it's so bad for Simona even pickleball players are giving their 2 cents," another fan wrote, in reference to Bouchard's decision to join the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) from next year.
"Focus on your pickleball career mate, wouldn't want to be a flop in 2 sports now," another fan chimed in.
"At least she didn’t retire to go play pickleball after being humbled by Dayana Yastremska, pathetic💀," said another disgruntled fan.
"Go play pickleball, thinking about tennis hasn't worked so well for you lately anyway," wrote another fan.
