Mirra Andreeva won through today against Xiyu Wang in the first round of the 2024 Wuhan Open and as a result set up a never before seen tie on the WTA Tour with sister Erika Andreeva.
They will be used to practicing with each other both as kids and now professionals but they have never crossed swords on the main WTA tour until now and it is the first time in four years that it has happened between siblings.
But it is a tie that was unlikely to happen until now anyway. Mirra has been the high flier of the two sisters on the main WTA Tour blazing a trail for herself and becoming a top 20 star now as of this week in her own right.
While Erika who is older than Mirra hasn't had it all her own way on the WTA Tour despite the younger sibling saying in the past that she is better than her and also that she doesn't like practicing with her.
This is down to both having very different game styles despite growing up together and practicing in each other's pockets. Erika Andreeva though is finally starting to blaze her own trail and path and has started picking up results for herself this season to follow her sisters' lead.
It is the first time that a pair of sisters will face off since 2020. Back then it was the Williams sisters back in Lexington, Kentucky and now it is Wuhan 2024. From the leading sister pairing back then to perhaps the next big sister pairing on the tour, it is from the past to the present. Given they have never played, who knows how it will pan out but it will be some tie around 11:30am tomorrow in Wuhan.
