The WTA awards a trophy to the player who finishes the year as World No.1, and in 2018 renamed it the Chris Evert Trophy, after the first woman to hold that distinction in the computer ranking era.
After the computer rankings were introduced on November 3, 1975, Chris Evert held the top spot for a total of 260 weeks. Since then, the World No.1 ranking has been held by 26 women, with 13 of them finishing the year as the WTA's top-ranked player.
The WTA introduced a One-on-One series with Chris Evert, where the 18-time Grand Slam champion hosts virtual interviews with former World No.1's and finds out what it takes to be an elite athlete and rise through the ranks.
Among those scheduled to be interviewed by Evert are current WTA No.1 Ashleigh Barty, along with several former World No.1's including Simona Halep and Victoria Azarenka.
“From the outside, all these champions are different, but they all have the same qualities inside,” said Evert. “There are a lot of players out there that have the hard work ethic, focus, discipline and desire. But the great champions are especially driven. They are steely, they are resolute, they are hungry. They will do whatever it takes, sacrifice-wise… they are prepared to go the extra mile.”
The One-on-One Series with Chris Evert will premiere on various official WTA channels in early 2021.
