Coco Gauff about to return at the WTA Finals.
Coco Gauff has done a lot in recent time to fix her everlasting troubles with her serve. The problems still seem to be there which is holding her back from reaching her full potential. Despite all the help she has had in recent times, Serena Williams' former coach Rick Macci believes that he can pinpoint the issue.
Already considerably ahead in the double fault count on the WTA Tour, the signs are not looking great for the 21-year-old who is still managing to go deep in tournaments despite her issues on court. The world number four brought in biomechanics specialist Gavan MacMillan who was supposed to iron out the troubles she had been experiencing.
This relationship began ahead of the 2025 US Open, and whilst still going on to this day it does not seem like the problem has been fully fixed. He has had success with the likes of Aryna Sabalenka in the past, who is now the world number one and the consistent dominant force in tennis.
This could be a blueprint of Gauff can figure out what is going on, but an outburst at her box in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships show that there is a lot of frustration leaking out from her.

Macci has his say

It is not just Serena and Venus Williams Macci has had the pleasure in coaching. Fellow Grand Slam champions Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova have also been guided by his wisdom and knowledge of the sport.
This makes him a well-respected figure that has a true voice in the sport. Tagging Gauff at the end of a tweet he posted on X, he was desperate for the two-time Grand Slam champion to read his opinion on how to solve these issues.
"Coco and her serve is biomechanically better," he wrote. "Gavin identified the real problems and I see it is stabilised. But because she is double jointed and her wires are so free flowing she has more shake and bake that causes extra movements in the arm without trying."
Macci stated how he would attempt to fix this. "I would go to a tight platform stance and put her on lockdown from the ground be in a cylinder bubble and no more double."
It would be interesting if Gauff and her team takes in the advice of Macci. She will be hoping that it gets better sooner rather than later with the Sunshine Double set to commence in the coming days. First the Indian Wells Open from March 2-15. Gauff reached the semi-final in 2024 in California but followed that up with a fourth round exit the next year. She has never made it past that stage in the Miami Open which begins shortly after the conclusion of the third WTA 1000 tournament of the year.
