It was a slow start for Coco Gauff where she struggled to win her service games but eventually the American figured things out against Mertens winning 6-4 6-0.
The win propelled her into another Roland Garros quarterfinal as she reached that stage last year as well. She lost in the quarterfinal last year but this year she might even go further. She is looking very solid and playing very well. Gauff being Guaff, she is still plagued by serving woes as she simply complicates things too much.
It's just something she will need to work on in the future. Today she played well early but failed to hold her serve. She broke Mertens twice in the early stages of the match but got broke twice as well. Eventually, she did find a solid rhythm on her serve and broke Mertens once more to finish off the first set 6-4. It was a very close set but Gauff simply chose her spots wisely.
The 2nd set was a set of tennis where Gauff completely destroyed her opponent. There is no other way in framing it as she was everywhere. 6-0 was the final score with Gauff hitting 8 winners compared to only 4 by Mertens. The Belgian also had 10 unforced errors and that did not help her. She only won 5 points on her serve in three service games as well so Gauff dominated.
