America’s
young tennis star
Coco Gauff has revealed that she will not play in the doubles
event at the
US Open. The 20-year-old is already regarded as one of the best
players currently playing in women’s tennis in the singles category, along with Poland’s
Iga Swiatek and Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka.
Gauff, who
will be defending her title in New York this year, was recently quoted in a
report where she talked about her plans going forward. The Atlanta-born star not
only confirmed that she will not play in the doubles category during the fourth
Grand Slam of the year but also stated that from now on, she will focus more on
playing in the singles category.
"No, no, nothing. Just singles [at US Open]. Yeah,
focus on that," she said. "No,
I'm not going to be playing doubles. The goal was to try to get as good as
possible for the Olympics and then, yeah. Every week, week-in and week-out, I'm
making the end of the week, if I'm playing singles and doubles usually I'm
there at the semis at least in one event. Yeah, it's just tough to go
week-in and week-out on tour, so that's the reason why. But maybe next year
I'll play here and there. I won't be playing doubles as consistently as I have
been in the past.”
Gauff recently participated in the Paris Olympics, where she
represented the Team USA. The current world number two played in three different
categories at the event but failed to secure a medal for her country. In the
singles category, she lost in the third round to Croatia’s Donna Vekic in
straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-2. In the doubles category, she and her
partner Jessica Pegula lost to the pair of Karolína Muchova and Linda Noskova
with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 10-5. In the mixed doubles category, Gauff and Taylor
Fritz lost in the quarterfinal to the pair of Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Felix
Auger-Aliassime with a score of 7-6, 3-6, 10-8.
