Former world number one
Serena Williams has revealed that she
is still very disappointed after losing to Italy’s Roberta Vinci in the semifinal
of the
US Open in 2015. The 42-year-old is already regarded as one of the best
players in the history of women’s tennis in the singles category, having won as
many as 23 Grand Slam titles.
Despite having such a fabulous career at the level, Serena faced
some dull moments as well. One of them came in the 2015 US Open when she
suffered a surprising defeat to Italy’s Vinci in the semifinal with a score of 2-6
6-4 6-4. It was her only defeat to the 41-year-old in five meetings.
Serena was recently quoted in a report explaining
how she is still disappointed about the result. The legendary tennis star
stated that she could not move on from the result. “It doesn’t end the
way it does in the movies,” she said. “No matter how much I feel like it could
and it should.. no matter what I could’ve done different, it wasn’t my story.
Winning is so glamorous. Everyone thinks it’s so amazing when you win. And it
is. It really is. But the more you win, the harder it is to lose. I don’t think
I was able to move on from that US Open loss. I was just so angry and just so
sad and disappointed in myself… said no one with 21 Grand Slams (at the
time). But it wasn’t enough for me.”
That competition was eventually won by another Italian, Flavia Pennetta, who defeated Vinci in the final in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-2. Serena had a fabulous record while playing at Flushing Meadows, where
she lifted the title six times. However, after that defeat against Vinci, the
Michigan-born star never managed to win the US Open in the singles category, even
though she played in the final twice.
