Coco Gauff prevailed 6-4, 7-5 against
Jessica Pegula to win the
Wuhan Open. It was a very tight match between the two Americans, with a mixture of class and sloppiness shown on court as both players strived for their first WTA 1000 success of the year, with Gauff managing to get over the line.
It has been a brilliant showing in China from Gauff, previously reaching the China Open semi-final. She overcame that disappointing defeat to Amanda Anisimova by taking down Moyuka Uchijima, Shuai Zhang, Laura Siegemund, Jasmine Paonini, and Pegula without dropping a single set. This is her second title of the year, adding to the Roland Garros title she clinched earlier this year.
The two-time Grand Slam champion had extinguished prior on-court issues which had plagued her grass and North American hardcourt swing to progress into the final. She prolonged that form in the premature stages of this final, holding to love before finding a break of serve enroute to a 3-0 lead. She had the chance to go four games ahead but failed to capitalise on her sole opportunity to.
Pegula kept the gap at two games before a plethora of errors from Gauff allowed Pegula to force the match back on serve. She then missed a backhand at the net to force a break point, with Gauff closing the game out the next time of asking. She would then pounce on her fellow American, breaking to take the first set. This is the ninth match on the bounce in which Pegula has dropped a set.
Gauff would go slightly off the rails at the start of the second set, hitting five double faults on the way to going 3-0 down in a trio of tight games. Two double faults at the end of the third game costed her dearly after she worked so hard to get back into the game.
The world number three wasted no time in breaking straight back, exploiting a huge slice of luck along the way before holding to close the gap to 3-2. She continued to peg back Pegula, breaking once more to abolish the 31-year-old's previous advantage.
The breaks would continue to come as Pegula once more scraped herself ahead, charging out to a 5-4 lead and having the opportunity to get her first set on the board. However, she endured an off game with Gauff taking full advantage. Errors would continue to creep into Pegula's game, and these would catch up to her after Gauff fought her way ahead, wrapping up the title with her first match point.
