In one of her better performances of the season,
Danielle Collins outplayed
Martina Trevisan to reach the quarterfinals of the
San Diego Open.
The American required an hour and 27 minutes to score a 6-2 6-4 victory over her Italian counterpart, relying on her power game that has helped her rise in the WTA rankings. Collins was great on serve in the first set, winning 90% of points behind her booming first serve. She broke Trevisan on three occasions, with the World No.31 salvaging a break back before Collins ran away with the set.
With the home crowd firmly on her side, the American looked to build off her momentum. However, Trevisan proved to be difficult, forcing Collins into long rallies that seemed to favor the Italian. Both ladies exchanged a series of breaks, before the American obtained a 5-3 lead. Despite failing to serve out the match, the Australian Open finalist was able to capitalize on Trevisan's inability to extend the set to a tiebreak, closing out proceedings and securing her spot in the quarterfinals.
Collins will face the winner between compatriot Louisa Chirico and second seed Paula Badosa for a spot in the semifinals.
