Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins halted a comeback by Spanish qualifier Cristina Busca at the 2022 US Open, rediscovering her rhythm to advance to the third round.
Collins dominated for the majority of the match in her 6-2 7-5 victory, relying on her powerful baseline game to destabilize her opponent. The American hit 28 winners to 17 unforced errors, as she employed her fearsome groundstrokes from both sides of the court.
After defeating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the previous round, Collins looked confident as she took control of the opening set. Busca was unable to develop a rhythm, as her higher-ranked opponent took the set out of her hands.
It appeared to be an early finish for Collins who raced to a 5-2 lead in the second set. However, Busca played some quality tennis to break back and level the score at 5-5. Nonetheless, the Spaniard was unable to take advantage of her momentum, as Collins regained he composure to obtain another break and close out the match after an hour and 29 minutes.
The 19th seed will face Alize Cornet in the third round, with the French veteran still feeling confident after disposing of defending champion Emma Raducanu in the opening round.
