Chris Evert
sent a heartfelt birthday message to her great friend Martina Navratilova.
The rivalry
and friendship between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova is a prominent
chapter in tennis history. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, these two
world-renowned tennis players faced each other on multiple occasions on the
court, marking one of the most notable rivalries in women's tennis.
Evert and
Navratilova met on the court a total of 80 times, with Navratilova winning 43
of those matches and Evert winning 37. They also played 60 finals against each
other, with Navratilova leading 36-24.
Both of
them held the world No. 1 ranking and concluded their careers tied with 18
Grand Slam titles each, currently trailing only behind Serena Williams and
Steffi Graf in the Open Era. Despite the intensity of their on-court rivalry,
Evert and Navratilova built a strong friendship that endures to this day.
On October
18th, Evert took the opportunity to greet her friend Navratilova on her 67th
birthday with an emotional message.
“Happy birthday
to my great friend @Martina who continues to inspire me with her strength,
resilience, and principles... You've got a huge heart, Martina, so appreciate
of our friendship,” Chris Evert wrote on her Twitter account.
Tennis
legends had one of the most epic rivalries in tennis and sports, ultimately
culminating in a friendship that has lasted for 50 years. Just a few months
ago, both of them reminisced about the time when they first met.
"When
I first met Chris and when she said hello to me, I was so excited,"
Martina Navratilova said in a video interview for Tennis Channel.
"In
1973 at Fort Lauderdale, I was walking by and she said, 'Hi,' and I'm like,
wow, Chris knows who I am,” Navratilova added.
