Danielle
Collins (No. 22) continues her streak by defeating
Ons Jabeur (No. 6) 6-3, 1-6,
6-3, advancing to the round of 16 at the WTA 500
Charleston Open. The American
remains in remarkable form with nine consecutive victories, this time securing
her second win of the season against a top-10 opponent.
The
30-year-old tennis player defeated world No. 4
Elena Rybakina last week at the
Miami Open, claiming her first WTA 1000 title. Despite the physical wear and
tear from consecutive weeks of tournaments, Collins maintained her presence in
Charleston and is showing that she also has strengths on clay.
On the
other hand, Jabeur seems to be experiencing her worst period in several years,
suffering her fourth consecutive first-round defeat and holding a poor record
of 2-6 in 2024. Additionally, the Tunisian was the Charleston champion in 2023
and will lose a significant number of points, gradually putting her on the
brink of falling out of the top 10.
The match
started with high tension, with Collins showing greater composure in crucial
points. The American saved six break points against her in the first two
service games, while capitalizing on her only opportunity on Jabeur's serve to
take a 3-0 lead.
The
Tunisian recovered one of the breaks but again failed to hold onto it, and
Collins maintained the lead. With the score at 5-2 in her favor, she had
another break and set point opportunity, but failed to convert. Nevertheless,
as in recent weeks, her service was almost flawless as she closed out the set
6-3.
Danielle Collins claims Miami Open trophy last week
Jabeur
wouldn't go down without a fight, and after a evenly-matched start to the
second set, the former world No. 2 won five consecutive games, including two
breaks, to take the set 6-1 and send the match to a decisive third set. The
three-times Grand Slam finalist won 57% of return points and 67% on serve at a
time when her opponent's level was low.
The
question was what Collins could show after losing a streak of 17 consecutive
sets since the Miami Open. In the third set, Jabeur appeared noticeably
frustrated and even smashed her racket after suffering the first break that put
Collins ahead 2-0.
Jabeur had
her chance by breaking back in the seventh game and bringing the score to 4-3
before serving, however, she was unable to hold onto it and ultimately
succumbed to a Collins who continues to play aggressively and dominate from the
baseline to close out the match 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Collins has
now won 18 of the last 19 sets she's played and 9 consecutive matches. It's her
fourth quarterfinal of the year and she's just one step away from returning to
the top 20. Her next opponent will be former US Open champion
Sloane Stephens,
who defeated Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-4.
