Danielle Collins (No. 22) continues her streak with a victory over Elise Mertens (No. 30) by 6-3, 6-4 at the Charleston Open. The American secures her 11th consecutive triumph and reaches the semifinals.
The former Australian Open finalist started with service troubles and conceded a break in the first game after giving four opportunities to Mertens. However, she managed to break back in the following game and restore parity.
With the score 3-2 in her favor, Collins secured her second break and took the definitive lead, then maintained the advantage from her service to take the set 6-3. The recent Miami Open champion was effective in capitalizing on both break opportunities she had.
The second set began with both players holding their first service games without trouble. In the fifth game, the opportunity arose for the local player, who again didn't hesitate to immediately take the break.
At that moment, Collins took control of the match and secured two consecutive breaks to lead 5-2. Although Mertens managed to break back, Collins didn't falter in her next service game and ultimately won the match 6-3, 6-4.
In her quest for the final, she will face the winner between Maria Sakkari (3rd seed) and Veronika Kudermetova (9th seed).
