For the first time since 1994, the defending
Wimbledon champion has been eliminated in the first round in the defence of her title with
Marketa Vondrousova being trounced by
Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
The Spaniard has been ever improving and was a real banana skin for Vondrousova who herself came into the tournament after falling in Berlin albeit she declared herself fully fit. But she was defeated fairly comfortably 6-4, 6-2 in a loss that not only will dent her confidence but also her ranking as she will now fall heavily.
The last women's champion to lose this early was Steffi Graf back in 1994 as Vondrousova was roundly beaten in just over an hour by the 21-year-old. To start off with Vondrousova didn't look herself producing two double faults already to start the match and it didn't get a lot better. She didn't look 100% but Maneiro produced the match of her life on the biggest stage she has played on thriving under the attention that Centre Court garners.
Vondrousova lost serve immediately, but she came back to lead the tie 3-2. Bouzas Maneiro hit back though in time with a 4-3 lead and consolidating the break of serve. She held roundly from there to win the opener 6-4. The game was all but won in the opening few games for the Spaniard. She exchanged breaks with Vondrousova going 2-1 up and this proved vital as she went onto take a 4-2 lead. She won two games fairly comfortably in a row from there to seal the win. Next up is likely Cristina Bucsa who is a set up on Ana Bogdan. But matches elsewhere are heavily rain delayed.
Speaking of former champions,
Elena Rybakina found her way through very comfortably to a tie against Laura Siegemund. It was business like Elena from the very beginning as she soundly beat Elena-Gabriela Ruse. In just over an hour and 10 minutes, it was an emphatic 6-3, 6-1 win for the fourth seed. One of the favourites for the title who realistically only didn't have the chance to defend last year really due to illness, she sits in an interesting Quarter too. She could face Leylah Fernandez or Caroline Wozniacki feasibly in the third round in a top tie. So one to watch for sure.
