World number one
Iga Swiatek has expressed her frustration
with the rain delays at the ongoing Omnium Banque Nationale
Canadian Open in
Montreal.
The 22-year-old managed to overcome Czech Republic’s Karolana
Muchova in the round of 16 clash with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Talking after the match, Swiatek was clearly unhappy with
how the match was halted because of the poor weather.
“We’ve been here since 9 AM,” she said. “It was a pretty
extraordinary day & I really wanted to use the opportunity to learn
something new & see what I’m capable of even though we played this match
like three times.”
Despite the hurdles, Swiatek will be pleased to book her
place in the quarterfinal of the event where she will face America’s Danielle
Collins on Friday.
The tournament is an extremely important one for the
Warsaw-born as anything but a victory might not be enough for her to keep the
top spot in the WTA rankings.
If Swiatek fails to win the tournament and her closest rival
Aryna Sabalenka manages to win, she will be dethroned from the top.
