America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff is set to play in the
2025
United Cup. The team-based competition is being played in January just
before the start of the first Grand Slam of the year — the Australian Open.
This year, women’s world number four Coco Gauff will make
her debut in the competition. She will team up with the 2024 US Open runner-up,
Taylor Fritz. The one-time Grand Slam winner was quoted in a report expressing
her excitement about participating in the competition. The Atlanta-born star
stated that it is nothing short of an honour to represent her country in the
competition.
“This will be my first time playing the United Cup, so I’m
super excited to kick off the year in Australia,” she said. “It’s really an
honor to represent my country. It’s a really cool event. I had a lot of fun
playing mixed doubles at the Olympics, so I kind of want to do that again. I’ve
never been to other parts of Australia other than Melbourne. I don’t know what
city we’re going to play in yet, but I’m super excited to go, whether it’s
Perth or Sydney.”
The tournament will feature a number of superstars, both
from men’s and women’s tennis. Current men’s number three Germany’s Alexander
Zverev, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, and Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas have
already confirmed their participation in the tournament. From the women’s side,
Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and Greece’s Maria Sakkari will also feature in the tournament.
The draw for the competition will be made on October 21, and the tickets for
the mega-event will go on sale the next day. This will be the third edition
of the United Cup. In the first edition, which was organised in 2023, it was
the team USA that emerged victorious over Italy with a score of 4-0. Last year,
it was Germany who came out on top against Poland with a score of 2-1.
