Switzerland’s legendary tennis star Roger Federer is set to take part in an exhibition match during the ongoing Shanghai Masters. The ATP 1000 event is currently going on in Shanghai where some of the best players in men’s tennis in the singles category have participated.
Federer, who is regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era, is set to play in an exhibition match during the event on October 11th. The former world number one landed in Shanghai on Tuesday and received a warm welcome.
Switzerland’s legendary tennis star retired from the sport in September 2022 after struggling with fitness concerns towards the later stages of his career. The 43-year-old finished his career with 20 Grand Slams. He was the first player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era to lift a major title more than 15 times. He was also the first player ever in the men’s singles category to win 20 or more Grand Slam titles in his illustrious career.
Federer won the Wimbledon title eight times which is still a record in the competition’s history. His first major title was Wimbledon which he lifted in 2003 after beating Australia’s Mark Philippoussis in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-2, 7-6. His last major triumph was in 2018 when he lifted the Australian Open after beating Croatia’s Marin Cilic in a five-set thriller with a score of 6–2, 6–7(5–7), 6–3, 3–6, 6–1. Federer also went on to win the ATP Tour Finals on six occasions — 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011. He won an Olympic gold for his country in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where in the doubles category, he along with his partner Stan Wawrinka defeated the pair of Sweden’s Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
