Taylor Fritz, the US Number One complained yesterday about his season being prolonged and that will be more the case now as he has reached the semi-final of the Shanghai Masters.
Fritz easily defeated David Goffin on Friday morning to set up a potential clash again with familiar nemesis Novak Djokovic who he has one of the worst records on tour against.
Sealing a 6-3, 6-4 win to reach the semi-finals for the first time, it was a dominant display from the US Open finalist who reached a fifth career ATP Masters 1000 semi-final. It is his second in 2024 after he reached this point in Madrid.
He has also virtually qualified for the ATP Finals so while he has had those gripes, he has very much fulfilled multiple ambitions this week in China and could yet add a title if he topples either Mensik or Djokovic tomorrow.
Sealing the win in just over an hour and 23 minutes, he opened up by breaking Goffin and surging into a 3-1 lead. But was broken back at 3-2 which made proceedings interesting against the resurgent Belgian. But Fritz exerted his dominance and came straight back for a 4-2 lead. He survived break points to make it 5-2 but closed it out 6-3 from there.
While the second set was more dominance based off one break as Fritz broke for 2-1 but unlike the first he kept hold of it for the most part despite surviving chances for Goffin to make it 3-3 and get back into it. He missed three match points at 5-3. But he returned to seal the deal at 6-4 and move through.
While for Goffin, it has been a successful week. He has returned to some semblance of form that he has shown in previous years when many expected his career to be almost done. Some week for him and a continued great week for Fritz.
